Just starting out financially and have no idea where to begin?
Let me start by saying: YOU ARE NOT ALONE, AND YOU SHOULD NEVER BE EMBARRASSED TO ASK QUESTIONS!
(I’m keeping that in all caps because I truly mean it.)
I talk with so many people who are just getting started with their finances, and one of the most common things I hear is how bad they feel for not knowing more. But here’s the truth: we don’t learn about money in school. Unless your parents taught you, or you took an extra course somewhere along the way—how would you know? This stuff isn’t intuitive, and it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed at first.
In fact, I’ve had conversations with people in their 40s and 50s who still feel embarrassed about not knowing some of the basics. So, wherever you are—breathe. It’s okay.
That said, I do encourage you to begin. Because starting—even just a little—is the most important part.
Here are a few foundational areas to explore as you begin building your financial life:
- Cash flow planning: What kind of system works for you? Some people love Excel, others prefer finance apps—there’s no right answer. Pick something that fits your life and feels manageable.
- Debt awareness: Understand what you owe and create a simple game plan to manage it.
- Taxes: Do you need to file? If so, how does that process work for your situation?
- Basic estate planning: Who would make decisions for you if something happened? Are those the people you’d want in charge?
- Insurance: Do you have the right coverage for your car, home, or apartment?
But again—start slow. I’ve included a more detailed checklist to help you get going. You don’t have to do it all at once. Choose one section at a time, and if you get stuck, reach out to a trusted mentor or advisor.
Good luck—and enjoy the process. Learning about money and building confidence in yourself is one of the most empowering things you can do.
I encourage you to start learning and saving as soon as you can—your future self will thank you!
With care,
